SHORT AND LONG TERM IMPACTS

Faculty Impacts

There are currently six (6) members of the music faculty in the SHSD comprising a total of 5.25 FTE (full time equivalent) teachers. Assignments of FTE are allocated as follows:

Elementary Vocal/General Music 3.25
Elementary Band .17
Middle High School General .20
Middle High School Band .33
Middle High School Choir .20
High School Band .50
High School Choir .60
Non-music Assignments .75
Total 6.00

Observations:

  1. Minimal staffing of the music program combined with implementation of different schedules and different start/end times to the school day further complicates the scheduling of music classes and teachers.

  2. No credit is given for a significant amount of "volunteer" work done by many teachers to maintain programs that are not funded by the district. This includes elementary choir.

  3. The allocation of travel time is either not provided to all teachers with multiple school assignments, or not determined at the time of this study for all teachers. There is some evidence that travel time reduces (takes place during) music teacher "prep time".

  4. Without the allocation of adequate FTE for a Music Supervisor, scheduling, budgetary decisions and the evaluation (professional growth assistance) of music faculty is either significantly complicated or absent.

  5. Elementary General Music teachers are primarily allocated through teacher preparation time ratio points, and therefore are not/should not be considered as part of the music budget FTE allocations.

  6. FTE allocations do not equate to actual time spent on tasks, as with other teachers who do not teach at both middle and senior high levels.

  7. Actual FTE allocations are listed by assignment in Appendix A.
